Hemming Workshop – Learn to Shorten Your Clothes
Learn how to confidently shorten and hem your own clothes in this calm, beginner-friendly workshop, spread across two sessions with a total of four hours of sewing time.
What is hemming?
Hemming simply means shortening the bottom of a garment and neatly finishing the edge — for example, taking up a pair of jeans that are too long or shortening a skirt to your preferred length.
What you’ll cover:
-
How to safely use our sewing machines
-
How to measure and mark the correct hem length
-
How to prepare your garment before hemming
-
Hemming jeans and trousers
-
Hemming skirts and dresses
-
Hemming T-shirts and other stretch garments
-
Different hemming techniques and when to use them
-
How to achieve a neat, durable finish you can recreate at home
Who it’s for:
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners, and no previous sewing experience is required. We’ll give you a quick introduction to our sewing machines at the beginning of the session so you can confidently use them for your hems.
If you’ve never used a sewing machine before and would like a more in-depth introduction to threading, winding a bobbin, machine settings and basic sewing techniques, we also recommend booking our Intro to Sewing Workshop
What to bring:
Please bring along several garments ( up to 4) you’d like to shorten or hem, such as jeans, trousers, skirts, dresses or T-shirts.
We can help you measure and mark the correct hem length in the studio. However, if you’re able to decide on your finished length and measure or pin your garments at home before the workshop, you’ll have more time to work on your hems during the session and may be able to complete more items.
How many garments you complete will depend on the type of garments you bring and the hemming techniques required.
All sewing machines, tools and threads will be provided on the day, so you only need to bring the clothes you’d like to work on.
