Abaya Sewing Workshop (6 Hours)

Create your own beautiful, open abaya — a relaxed, versatile layer you can wear again and again.

This workshop is perfect for beginners and confident beginners alike. We’ll guide you step by step, from using the sewing machine to assembling and finishing your garment, so you leave with an abaya you’ve made yourself.

What you’ll make

A simple, open-front abaya with a loose, comfortable fit. Designed without pockets to keep the process beginner-friendly, with the option to customise the length to suit your style.

What you’ll learn

• How to thread and confidently use a sewing machine
• Understanding seam allowances and grain line
• Cutting fabric accurately for garments
• Sewing long straight seams
• Constructing a loose-fitting garment
• Finishing raw edges neatly
• Hemming for a clean, professional finish

What to bring

Everyone must bring their fabric pre-cut to the workshop. A sewing pattern will be sent in advance, along with a clear step-by-step video showing how to cut your fabric correctly. Please make sure you have a good pair of fabric scissors at home. If you feel you may need support with this step, feel free to send us a message

Fabric requirements:

• Wide-width fabric (140–150cm): 2.5–3 metres
• Narrow-width fabric (110–115cm): 3–3.5 metres

(These amounts are suitable for someone up to approx. 1.70m / 5ft 7 and up to a UK size 16. You may need more depending on height or desired length.)

Suitable fabrics:
Light to medium-weight woven fabrics such as:

• cotton poplin
• linen
• viscose
• crepe
• lightweight cotton blends

Avoid very slippery fabrics like satin or chiffon if you’re a beginner.

You’ll also need:

• Matching thread (we have black and white available in the studio)

Please prewash your fabric with similar colours, as some fabrics may shrink or bleed.
