What to Expect at a Sewing Lesson at On A Sew
If you’ve been thinking about booking a sewing lesson but you’re not quite sure what to expect, let me walk you through it.
First of all — you don’t need to know anything before you come. You don’t need experience, confidence, or even to know how to thread a machine. That’s what I’m here for.
Bring Your Own Sewing Machine (If You Have One)
If you already own a sewing machine, I always encourage you to bring it along.
Why? Because there’s nothing worse than feeling confident in class… and then going home and not knowing how to use your own machine.
Every machine is slightly different. The buttons are in different places, the tension works a little differently, and sometimes they can feel temperamental. So bring it in. Let’s get to know it properly.
We’ll thread it together, adjust the settings, and I’ll answer all those little questions you’ve probably Googled at 10pm.
And if you don’t have a sewing machine yet — don’t worry. We have machines in the studio ready for you to use.
Ask All the Questions
Lessons at On A Sew are very relaxed and practical. You can ask anything — and I mean anything.
Not sure why your stitches look loose?
Thread keeps bunching underneath?
Machine making a strange noise?
Fabric not feeding through properly?
Bring the problem with you and we’ll troubleshoot it together.
Sewing is so much easier when someone is right there to guide you. Often it’s a tiny adjustment that makes all the difference.
What We Actually Do in a Lesson
If you’re a complete beginner, we usually start with something simple like a cushion. It’s the perfect way to learn how to cut fabric accurately, sew straight seams, understand seam allowances, and build confidence.
From there, we can move onto mending, alterations, or garment-making — depending on what you’d like to learn.
If you’re more experienced, lessons are tailored to you. Bring your project. Bring your pattern. Bring your “I don’t understand this bit” moments.
We’ll work through it together.
It’s More Than Just Sewing
What I love most about the studio is the atmosphere. People walk in nervous and leave smiling. There’s always chatting, learning, the occasional unpicking (because that’s part of sewing!), and a real sense of support.
You’re not expected to be perfect. You’re expected to learn.
So if you’ve been thinking about booking a lesson, this is your sign.
Bring your machine if you have one. Bring your questions. Bring your curiosity.
And let’s figure it out together.
