How to Use Iron-On Sewing Labels: A Step-by-Step Guide

Iron-on sewing labels are a quick and easy way to add a professional touch to your handmade garments, accessories, or quilts. Whether you're crafting a gift or branding your sewing creations, these labels are durable, washable, and incredibly simple to apply—no sewing required! In this blog post, I’ll guide you step-by-step through the process of attaching iron-on labels perfectly.

What You’ll Need

Your iron-on sewing label

An iron

A flat, hard surface (not an ironing board with mesh)

A finished garment or item

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Set Up Your Iron

Turn your iron to a low cotton setting. It’s important that the temperature does not exceed 160°C (320°F).

Switch off the steam function—you want a dry heat for the label to adhere properly.

2. Prepare Your Surface and Garment

Avoid using a soft or mesh ironing board alone, as this could cause uneven results. Instead, place your garment on a flat, hard surface like a table or sturdy board.

Make sure your garment is clean and free of moisture or wrinkles. Use the iron to smooth out any creases beforehand.

3. Position the Label

Decide where you want to place the label on your garment. Once you’re satisfied with the position, lay it flat on the fabric.

4. Apply Heat

Place the hot iron on top of the label.

Use firm pressure and hold the iron in place for 10-16 seconds.

5. Cool and Peel

Allow the label to cool down completely.

Once cool, slowly peel off the clear sheet from the top of the label. Take your time to avoid damaging the edges.

6. Re-Iron for Extra Adhesion

Take the clear sheet you just peeled off and place it back on top of the label.

Press the iron down for an additional 5 seconds to ensure the label is fully adhered.

Tips for Best Results

Durability: These labels are designed to withstand regular washing. To keep them looking new:

Wash your item in cold water or at a temperature up to 40°C.

Avoid using bleach.

Skip the tumble dryer and let the garment air dry to extend the life of the label.
